A blot on India

December 19, 2007

Nandigram residents seek answers to the following questions from those who still swear by the CPI-M and its policies:

  • Most of the CPI-M 'martyrs' mentioned in all too prominent hoardings across Nandigram have been found to be alive. Is it not proof enough that the mayhem was commenced, committed and concluded by CPI-M cadres?
  • More than 100 Bhumi Uchhed Pratirodh Committee activists are missing even though a few of the mutilated bodies, body parts, bones have been traced at Khejuri, near Nandigram. Have all the missing people been killed and buried?
  • Not even 10 per cent of the affected population in Nandigram has got compensation. A Calcutta high court bench directed the West Bengal government to pay Rs 500,000 to the next of kin of those killed in the police firing, Rs 100,000 to each of the injured and Rs 200,000 to each rape victim who had been identified. The compensation was to be paid within a month. When and how will relief reach those affected?
  • A Bengali daily recently reported that the March 14 firing on Bhoomi Uchhed Pratirodh Committee activists in Nandigram was orchestrated by some individuals in Writer's Building, the seat of government in West Bengal. Who are the leaders who directed the police to fire at a peaceful BUPC procession?
