It's impossible for even the most indifferent of people not to be moved by the plight of the Nandigram residents.
Just take a 10-minute walk into villages of Satengabari, Ranichowk, Gokulnagar and Sonachura and you are sure to run into debris of broken houses, hutments, scattered pieces of household items, clothes, utensils, et al.
You will also meet a few people, still dazed by the violence that had disrupted their lives, rummaging through the debris, trying to string together the remains of what used to be their home 'once'.
If you move northward from Satangabari, a strong stench is sure to fill your senses. "Didi, we have dumped the burnt remnants of our belongings in that khal (ditch), hence the smell," explains 29-year-old Nasima Khatun. Her husband went missing after the police fired upon Bhumi Uchhed Pratirodh Committee members on March 14.
"We have lodged a missing person's complaint at the Nandigram police station, but nothing came of it. I just hope and pray that they (read CPI-M cadres) haven't killed him," she said.
