6. Deepika Padukone

December 18, 2007

Sure, she's the new kid on the block. It just happens, however, that she starred in the year's biggest Hindi release.

As launches go, Deepika Padukone had the unquestioned biggie. A massive masala entertainer, promoted with the greatest hype-spree witnessed in Bollywood, with her pretty face appearing on magazine covers and billboards. The film pitted her opposite the industry's unquestioned supremo, Shah Rukh Khan -- and the film made sure she didn't even have to act much. Ethereality comes naturally to Deepika, and this worked.

Om Shanti Om catapulted Deepika right into the A-list, and her next films include Warner Bros' first Indian production, Made In China, opposite Akshay Kumar.

The hits seem likely to continue.
