Thankfully, her bravery did not go unnoticed

December 18, 2007

Farzana learnt swimming early, which came in good stead in her daring act of rescue.

Thankfully, her bravery did not go unnoticed and a Hong Kong-based humanitarian organisation rewarded her with a $2,000 reward.

A representative from Supreme Master Ching Hai International, a spiritual and philanthrophic organisation, travelled to Farzana's village in Baisi to laud her effort and hand her the honour.

Yetu Ken, its representative, said Farzana had inspired many people, particularly children, by her courage and the association had rewarded her to highlight such rare feats that often go unreported.

Farzana's family live in what is categorised as Below the Poverty Line, and on its part, the Bihar government has announced free education for the brave girl. She was admitted to the Kasturba Gandhi school at Baisi. Local police officers too announced a reward for her.

Truly, a heroine for our times.
