A film about a frankly unpopular sport and no heroine

December 11, 2007

As projects go, this was an unlikely one. Especially considering where it was made.

Yash Raj Films is known for its uber-commercial fare, glitzy romances served up with much megabudget garnish, and this was a Shah Rukh Khan film without a heroine. A feature minus the item songs and the hoopla, an authentic sports film about a frankly unpopular sport.

The initial promos were received badly, with a team of girls grittier than what Bollywood is used to. "There's no razzle dazzle, and we tried to stay true to the story," said director Shimit Amin, an odd fit for the project given his last, Ab Tak Chhappan, a hard-hitting police drama.

Yet he and screenwriter Jaideep Sahni stood strongly by the film. A few days before the film released, Amin said something that seems, in hindsight, rather prescient. "This wasn't an easy film, and the entire cast and crew worked very hard. Something makes it very special when your cast is this dedicated, and I think that shows in the movie. You can tell you're making not a regular movie, but something special." Indeed.
