Despair and Hope
'The law is ruled by the power of money'
December 03, 2007
What could have happened 50 years back is happening now," says Professor Rahman. "Does it mean we are living in a regressive society? How can the police intrude into a married couple's life? It's an instance of the State killing love. And I just can't come to terms with it."
His words are echoed by a senior Kolkata police officer who speaks on condition of anonymity. "The police interfering in people's personal lives is a common phenomenon in Kolkata. I know quite a few sub-inspectors who deal with hundreds of domestic cases every month, especially when instructed by the rich and famous."
But is such action not illegal? "The law is ruled by the power of money. It is purchased and sold every minute. The law only punishes the weak and the poor. It has a different connotation altogether for the rich and the influential," says the police officer.
