2. The rain

Even before Terrible Tuesday took around 1,000 lives in Maharashtra and brought Mumbai to its glamorous knees, there was rain in Gujarat and a great deal of devastation.

And even as July 26 was a fresh memory, the heavens opened up over Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, where they continue to hold lives and livelihoods captive.

Now, winter appears to have arrived, and there are two whole seasons to go before the monsoons show up next. After a long, long time, this is one dry spell a great many thousands will probably be thankful for.

Please, God, go easy on the waterworks in 2006…
