Though spin bowling is always wrapped in mystery and magic, Kumble's bowling was workman-like. He didn't have the variety of Shane Warne or the lethal edge of Muttiah Muralitharan, or so it seemed.
He was an unconventional spinner, bowling at almost medium-pace. 884 international wickets later, critics still argue over whether he could turn the ball.
But Kumble earned success on his own terms, his own silent terms. A prime achiever in a largely underachieving team.
As legendary left-arm spinner Bishen Singh Bedi put it after Kumble reached the 500 Test wicket mark in Chandigarh last March, 'Kumble is the poor man's Superman.'
