'It was all worth the effort'

November 13, 2008

Aruna Anand is described as the World chess champion's wife, companion and manager. Not surprising. That's because she efficiently manages her husband's affairs so that he can concentrate only on playing the game.

  • After interviewing the World champion while he was still in Germany, Shobha Warrier spoke with Aruna. Here's what she had to say on her husband's preparation, strategy and the triumph.

This title is very special. For many months Anand had been working on his game, and our whole life was woven around this. Now that it is over, we do not know what to do!

    Special: King of 64 squares

Since December last, Anand had been thinking about the match, but the actual preparation started in April, when he first trained in Chennai. We then came back to Europe and started playing with the rest of the team.

So, generally, from April everything else was put on hold except his preparation. If somebody invited us for dinner, we would say, Anand is preparing, we can't come. For so many months, all of them worked so hard, and it is so fulfilling that it was all worth the effort.
