Tragedy struck 14 years ago, on the first day of May.

Brazilian Formula One driver Ayrton Senna succumbed to injuries after a high-speed crash at the San Marino Grand Prix in Imola on May 1, 1994.

The picture alongside shows Senna inspecting his steering wheel before the start of the race. A 500-page report officially blamed failure of the steering wheel for Senna's death.

Two incident preceded his demise. In the first practice session, Rubens Barrichello, was involved in a serious accident and did not compete in the race. In the qualifying, the death of Austrian driver Roland Ratzenberger reinforced Senna's safety concerns and caused him to even contemplate retirement from the sport.
