Playing as midfielder, Lukas Podolski scored three of Germany's four goals in the tournament. With forwards Mario Gomez and Miroslav Klose in poor form his absence could have beeen a significant blow for Joachim Loew's side.

Podolski injured his calf in Germany's 1-0 win over Austria and was almost out of the quarter-final against Portugal.
Germany just about made it to the last eight and were definitely struggling. However, Podolski was finally cleared to play after recovering from a calf muscle injury, much to Loew's relief.
