EURO 2008: The best of the group stage

June 19, 2008

Euro 2008 has seen 24 exciting matches played over 12 days. The best matches of the first phase of the tournament were, arguably, the Italy-France game and Turkey's 3-2 thriller against the Czech Republic.

Fifty-seven goals have been scored so far -- an average of 2.38 per match.

Only three red cards were handed out.

The Netherlands, without doubt, was the best team on view. Drawn in the 'Group of Death', which also included Italy, France and Romania, they scored the most goals (9) and conceded the least (1) and finished with a perfect record of 9 points from three matches.

A look at some of the best moments of the first phase.

  • Wesley Sneijder turned in a brilliant performance for the Dutch in their Euro 2008 campaign. The Real Madrid player scored in his side's opening 3-0 win over Italy and his goal against France was brilliantly taken. It sent France to their heaviest defeat in a finals since Brazil beat them 5-2 in the World Cup semis in Sweden 50 years ago.
