Thousands of workers are putting the finishing touches to a $40 billion transformation of the capital for the Aug. 8-24 Games, while officials finetune the rules they hope will keep the city clean, safe and controlled.
"I wish the Games would come and end sooner, there have been too many inspections of our work and the pressure is heavy," said a woman cleaning the streets outside Chaoyang Park, who did not want to be named.
"I am happy that the Olympics are being held in Beijing, though. We Beijingers are proud and all Chinese are proud."
