Tsonga, bidding to become just the second Frenchman to win a grand slam singles title in the Open era, lost the first game of the match on his serve but he broke the Serb straight back.
The pair produced several long rallies as they worked each other all around the court, and although Tsonga had two break points in the fourth game, Djokovic was able to hold.
Tsonga, however, created a set point in the 10th game with an audacious passing shot and sealed it when he scrambled to a Djokovic forehand and pulled off a clever lob.
