Of Maradona, madness and meltdown

< Back Next >
'It's a lifetime experience,' I had told myself and the notion stayed with me until this Sunday when I was at the Mother House.

The rather narrow approach to the building was bursting at the seams. I felt lost in a sea of crowd -- there were at least 2000-odd onlookers, media persons, security guards, police, organisers -- anybody and everybody.

They were people from every walk of life -- some even travelled for hours from the suburbs to catch a glimpse of their 'god'. It had been a long haul for each one of them.

Their wait was over as the steel Mercedes drove into the alley; people went berserk within a second and those in charge of security had to wield their batons.

Some ran for their lives while some climbed the trees dotting the road and decided to be there till the Argentinean star got out of the car. Maradona did not disappoint his admirers.

Clad in blue jeans and black tea shirt, he did come out of the car, thumped his chest ala Maradona style and blew kisses.

I could almost hear the heartbeat of the youth standing next to me. 'Oh god, oh god, oh god', is all that he could mutter.

Maradona stayed inside for almost 30 minutes and during that time I got a chance to get friendly with a few of police officers guarding the area.
