'The win is just sinking in'

August 13, 2008

Abhinav's father Apjit and mother Babli Singh are so overwhelmed that they are short for words and expressions. Television channels have cornered them and are asking mother Babli which is the dish that Abhinav cherishes most.

  • Babli is a well-groomed Indian lady. She says her son is as normal as any son can be. He likes different cuisine and has a passion for non-vegetarian food, especially sea food. His favourite dish, of course, is Tandoori chicken. And he loves cars, watches and clothes.

The parents, it seems, are overwhelmed by "God's grace", but not at all surprised about their son's success in Beijing. Babli says: "The win is just sinking in. Today [Monday] was really a big day. Today is the most beautiful day of my life."

  • Abhinav: Up, close and personal
  • The family, including her daughter Divya and her sister-in-law Dolly Lamba, "were waiting for this day to happen since the last 14 years".

Divya, a fashion designer, is married into the wealthy Kapoor family of New Delhi which manufactures Atlas Cycles.

Apjit Bindra's sister Dolly says, "I am the favourite of my brother and Abhinav is my favourite! Both Abhinav and Divya love to hear bed-time stories from me. Our family members are very close to each other."

Pointing out that Abhinav doesn't have many traits of his father, she says, "He has got the softness and patience from his mother."
