World number two Russia's Maria Sharapova made a tentative start to her French Open campaign registering a hard fought 6-3, 7-6 victory over France's Emilie Loit.
The 20-year-old, who has never gone beyond the quarter-finals on four previous visits to the French capital, looked rusty but did enough to set up a second-round match with American Jill Craybas.
