Putin does the trick for Sochi
July 5, 2007
An innovative concept and Russian President Vladimir Putin's enthusiastic backing were key factors in the surprise decision to award the 2014 Winter Games to Russia's Sochi city, officials said.
The International Olympic Committee had to choose between tradition represented by Salzburg in Austria, an Asian destination represented by South Korea's Pyeongchang, and Sochi's seashore and mountain concept.
Salzburg was eliminated in the first round. IOC members then voted 51 to 47 in favour of Sochi over Pyeongchang, saying the Russian bid offered a new option for the Winter Olympics.
