The unseeded 143-ranked Russian shocked Sania 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 in a little under two-and-a-half hours to advance to the last four.
Sania, however, had some consolation by way of a berth in the doubles semi-finals. She and Italy's Mara Santangelo got the better of Neha and Shikha Uberoi 6-3, 6-1 in the quarter-finals.
In Saturday's semi-finals, Sania and Mara will play Su-Wei Hsieh of Chinese Taipei and Alla Kudryavtseva of Russia, who got the better of Chunmei Ji (Chn) / Shengnan Sun (Chn) 7-6, 6-4.
