'Highbury had a great atmosphere'

August 7, 2007

Born in nearby Islington, George has been witness to the drama at the stadium from both sides of the fence. An avid Gunner, he joined the club in 1966 before making his debut for the first team in 1969.

He netted a spectacular 20-yard winner in extra-time to help Arsenal beat Liverpool 2-1 in the FA Cup final in 1971 at the Wembley stadium to complete the club's first 'double'.

The BBC described the incident thus: 'Whichever club you support, Charlie George's celebration after scoring the winner in the 1971 FA Cup final remains one of football's most enduring images.

'After smashing an unstoppable shot past Liverpool goalkeeper Ray Clemence, George collapsed to the Wembley turf, lying flat with his arms outstretched.'

"I think I lay on the ground for 30 minutes after that," George smiles when I remind him of his famous celebration.

So what is the difference between the old stadium and the new?

"This is definitely bigger," ventures George. "But Highbury had a great atmosphere."

It also had a soul.

The old stadium has been transformed into an apartment complex -- the Stadium-Highbury square -- complete with a fitness centre and swimming pool.

The famous pitch is now a community garden.
