On Sunday, July 23, another American, with yet another stirring tale of human spirit, answered that question.
Floyd Landis, Armstrong's former teammate, filled in the void admirably.

He became the third American to win the world's most prestigious bicycle race, joining seven-time champion Armstrong and three-time winner Greg LeMond.
Landis beat Oscar Pereiro of Spain by 57 seconds, the smallest margin since LeMond edged Laurent Fignon by a
record-low eight seconds in 1989.
