Beckham's high and lows

His captaincy questioned by the English media before the 2006 World Cup, Beckham responded by engineering wins over Paraguay and Ecuador. He became the first England player to score at three World Cups with his goal against Ecuador.

In tears at his substitution due to injury in England's quarter-final defeat by Portugal, he resigned the captaincy the next day in an emotional public response.

July 1, 2006: Beckham is distraught after being substituted during the 2006 World Cup quarter-final against Portugal in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. England lost to Portugal 3-1 in the penalty shootout.
