Beckham's high and lows

He scored at the 1998 World Cup against Colombia, but was infamously sent off against Argentina in a second-round game which England subsequently lost on penalties.

He was vilified by English fans and the English media on his return from France. An effigy of his was hung from a lamp-post as the hate campaign gathered momentum.

June 30, 1998: Beckham is sent off by referee Kim Nielsen after lashing out at Diego Simeone of Argentina during the World Cup match at the Stade Geoffroy Guichard in St Etienne, France. England lost 4-3 on penalties as the game ended 2-2 after extra-time.
