Andre Agassi utilised 20 years of U.S. Open experience on Thursday to fend off Croatian 2.08-metre tall Ivo Karlovic 7-6, 7-6, 7-6 and reach the third round.
The former world number one is the host nation's main contender for the men's singles crown following the first-round exit of 2003 champion Andy Roddick.
"Today required a lot of concentration because it only took a mental lapse for one or two shots and the set's over with," said the seventh seed, who will play Czech 32nd seed Tomas Berdych for a place in the last 16.
