French Open: The Men's Challenge
Andy Roddick (US)
Age: 22
Grand Slam titles: One (US Open 2003)
Record at the French Open: 2004-second round, 2003-first round, 2002-first round, 2001-third round.
Roddick won his maiden Grand Slam in 2003 and reached number one in the world. Like Federer, he has a poor Roland Garros record.
Having made a swashbuckling debut in 2001, when he reached the third round, the American has suffered two first-round defeats in the last three years.
A sporting gesture during the Rome Masters -- when he overruled a linesman at match point against Fernando Verdasco and ended up losing the contest -- might have cost him some much-needed practice but enhanced his global appeal.
Despite showing in smaller events that he can be a force on the red surface, he has yet to prove his claycourt craft against the baseline specialists.
