Real Madrid's victory meant that they have now narrowed the gap on Barcelona to just nine points, ahead of next weekend's clash between the top two in the Bernabeu.

Barcelona top the league with 69 points from 30 matches, while Real are second with 60.

Villarreal, who beat Athletic Bilbao 3-1 on Saturday, occupy third place, 10 points adrift of Real with a game in hand, while Real Betis are fourth.
