Sepp Maier of Germany

He played almost 400 consecutive matches between 1966 and 1977 without missing a match! In that period he was ranked the best goalkeeper in the world alongside the likes of Gordon Banks and Dino Zoff.

Nicknamed 'Die Katze' (the cat) for his elasticity, Maier was definitely a crowd favourite and often made some impossible saves wearing his trademark long black shorts.

An unfortunate car accident in 1979 ended his career at the age of 35, just when he seemed destined for greater glory.
