Alonso finished second. The young Spaniard opted for a three-stop strategy and led for half the distance. But world champion Schumacher, with a four-stop strategy and a lighter car, outwitted the Renault team.
"To carry so much fuel was a little bit of a penalty. Second position was maybe the maximum we could achieve today," Alonso said after the race.
