A delighted Gatlin embraces compatriot Shawn Crawford after emerging as the fastest man.

Shawn Crawford of the U.S. finished fourth in 9.89 seconds, Jamaican Asafa Powell was fifth in 9.94 and world champion Kim Collins of St Kitts and Nevis sixth in 10.00. It was the first time in Olympic history that five men had gone under 10 seconds.

"I've been dreaming about this since I started racing. I've lived for this moment. It was a very great race, the competition was stellar," said an elated Gatlin after completing a victory lap of the Olympic stadium with a laurel wreath on his head.
