Japan's Ai Shibata smiles after winning the gold medal in the women's swimming 800 metre freestyle final.
The 22-year-old provided Japan their first female swimming champion in 12 years.
"I really wanted to be part of the Japanese gold rush at the Olympics but I never thought I'd actually win," Shibata said.
