The first thing that V Ganapati Stapathi, 82, who was honoured with a Padma Bhushan this year, told me was, "I am a very angry man. I have been angry for the last two years.
"Here, in India, nobody understands the value of knowledge. How many of you understand that even Adi Shankaracharya was in search of Nano technology? What is the meaning of what he said, neti..neti.? What you call space is Nano space! But today's people are all materialistic. They don't talk about spirituality. Their knowledge of philosophy is zero. Everybody is groping in the dark, and that is why I am angry.
"I want the people of India to understand their own culture. I won't speak to you on material things. If you have anything spiritual to talk about, speak to me. I have wasted 80 years of my life."
After half an hour of tirade, he agreed rather reluctantly to talk about 'some mundane things'.
