Tamil names spelt in French

January 07, 2009
The short corridor that separates the common dining hall and the VIPs' dining enclosure at the Chennai Trade Centre, the venue for the 7th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, is lined up with an array of black and white photographs on either side.

'Pongal', says the red caption on the first photograph to the right. The second one, which seems to capture the exact moment between the huge blade striking a goat's neck and its blood splattering on a spectator, is titled 'Sacrifice'. 'Fire walking', says the third one.

Several mug shots adorn the left wall. At first glance, these pictures look like a sampling of Tamil culture.

But the first giveaway is the spelling on the mugs. The names are Tamil, indeed, but the spellings aren't. These are Tamil names spelt in French.
