It's 'buy election' time in Tamil Nadu

January 03, 2009
Back in Thirumangalam town, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam cadre are not worried about the money distribution. They declared, "We were the first off the bloc. We finished distributing before these people even started. Just watch us on the day before the polling."

Former minister and Thirunchendur legislator Anita Radhakrishnan denies any wrong doing.

"The ruling party has the money but we have the votes. Do you remember the Chennai Law College violence where Thevars were beaten up by the Scheduled Castes in front of television cameras and a docile police? This is a Thevar majority area. The Thevars have not forgiven the government for watching while their students were beaten up. They will give a fitting reply to the DMK," he says.

Being a Thevar-dominated area, the three main political parties contesting the election have fielded candidates from the community -- all sporting handle bar moustaches and macho looks. The only exception among the lot is the DMK candidate, who is a woman.
