It's 'buy election' time in Tamil Nadu

January 03, 2009
In Kallikudi -- the southern most village of this assembly seat -- there is a big crowd inside a main party office. An altercation is underway. A person laments before the party honcho that his village had received all the money when they distributed money with the voters list, but today they were giving money for each house, and half his village had been neglected.

The leader immediately calls up the local big wig, "You are spoiling everyone's name here. If someone goes and complains in Madurai we will all be in trouble. You come here immediately with the accounts."

Meanwhile, another man is heard complaining that 65 voters in his ward have not even received the first allotment of money according to the voters' list. The party men had clearly distributed money twice, once to every voter and now to every house.
