Bangladesh rebels agree to lay down arms
February 26, 2009
Mutinous members of a Bangladesh paramilitary unit agreed to lay down their arms and accept an amnesty offered by the government, one of their officers said, after fighting over a pay dispute which killed at least five people on Wednesday.
Heavy gunfire had broken out in the morning as enlisted men met with officers over a pay and command dispute at the Bangladesh Rifles' Dhaka headquarters, sending civilians fleeing and leading to a standoff with troops and police.
