India asks Lanka to ensure the safety of Tamils

Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee while speaking to media persons in New Delhi on Thursday said that, though the Sri Lanka President Mahindra Rajapakse has assured the safety of its Tamil civilians, but Colombo should make efforts to achieve the devolution and political solution to the decades-old ethnic conflict.
Fighting has continued as the Sri Lankan Army has closed in on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam's holding.
