The BMS was established by Balkrishna Shivram Moonje in the year 1937. The foundation stone was laid by H.E. Sir Roger Lumley, Governor of the erstwhile Bombay province, on Decebver 2, 1941.
Says Principal R R Kute: "B S Moonje was a great freedom fighter. He had only one aim in founding BMS: To educate and train Indians in arms warfare and develop a sense of love for their nation." He feels that Dr Moonje's aim has been achieved by BMS since its inception.
Dr Moonje, an eye surgeon by profession, was shocked at the absence of Indian soldiers during the Boers War where he had gone to treat the British soldiers fighting the war. It was this incident that sowed the seeds of BMS, says Kute.
