Yeddyurappa: '24-hour' politician in the hot seat

May 28, 2008
Some claim that he has completed his bachelor of arts degree, but Bookanakere villagers maintain that he studied only up to the 9th standard and discontinued his education. At the age of 23 he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. After working for a couple of years in Mandya, he was deputed to Shimoga to build the RSS there in 1965. Yeddyurappa's close friends say that this is where he began his love affair with Shikaripura from where he has won five elections. At Shikaripura, he groomed RSS workers to join politics. He grew in strength and won the first election from here in 1993. From then it has been a dream run for the man barring the year 1999 when he lost.

At Shikaripura, he took up a job at a rice mill and worked there for a few years. So impressed was his boss by his honesty and dedication, that he gave his daughter's hand in marriage to Yeddyurappa.

Says Chandramouli, a relative of Yeddyurappa, "From what I know of him, he is short tempered alright. But there is this humble side to him and a genuine caring for other people. It is very easy for anyone to identify with him and I know for sure that power never gets into his head. He is easily approachable and will try and help if someone asks for it."
