Security was also tight in Udupi district, which witnessed a Naxal attack late Thursday evening. Bhoja Shetty, a school teacher was killed by a gang of six Naxals, along with his brother-in-law Suresh. The cops say that Shetty had been receiving threats from Naxals as he was supporting the BJP.
Voters spreading across the districts of Dakshin Kannada, Bellary, Shimoga, Udupi, Uttar Kannada, Chitradurga, Koppal, Davangere, Chikmagalur, and Raichur comprising 66 constituencies exercised their franchise to decide the fate of 589 candidates.
In the first phase of the elections comprising 89 constituencies, the voter turnout was 66 per cent. The third phase of the elections will held on May 22, which would involve most districts of Northern Karnataka.
