Jaipur: Amidst misery, kindness of a few

"My uncle runs this PCO. Today, he did not come and when I came in the morning I saw many people looking for their relatives among the dead and the injured. Many of them are poor illiterate people, who have come from far off villages to find out about the fate of their near and dear ones. I thought I had to contribute in some way and decided to allow free calls for today," Singh said.

Though Singh stands out in the crowd thanks to his large heart, there are others who have pitched in to assist the state machinery cope with helping those injured in the May 13 serial blasts in Jaipur.

Just like Singh, Vodafone and Reliance have sent their mobile units and set up two phone lines each for the benefit of the kin of the injured and deceased.

"We set up the lines at 8:30 pm on Tuesday night and so far have helped at least 500 people," the person manning the Vodafone lines said.

Local welfare organisations also have set up kiosks, where they liaison with the hospital authorities and streamline the scores of blood donors who queued up outside the hospital.
