Karnataka election: Crorepatis galore!

Text : Vicky Nanjappa

May 08, 2008
The assets declared by many candidates contesting the Karnataka assembly election have stunned pundits and public alike.

With the mining and real estate lobbies actively taking part in the election, it was evident that Karnataka would boast of many wealthy candidates. The declaration of the assets and liabilities before the Election Commission by the candidates confirms this.

Leading the pack is real estate developer and Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Prasad Reddy who will contest the polls from the BTM Layout constituency in Bangalore. Valued at Rs 313 crore (Rs 3.13 billion) as per his declaration before the Election Commission, he is easily the richest politician in Karnataka today.

Even though there is a long list of crorepatis in the fray, there are five candidates who have valued themselves at zero in their declarations: are G M Gadkar, G M Yusuf, H R Nagendra of the Bahujan Samaj Party and G Munthyalappa and C Thamappa of the Samajwadi Party.
