A three-phased programme initiated eight years ago for the transition to democracy was nearing culmination as new governments had been elected both at the centre and in the four provinces, Musharraf said.
He expressed the hope that in the coming days, the federal and provincial governments will be in place and work to put Pakistan on the road to progress and prosperity.
Besides ensuring political stability and sustained economic development, the new administration will have to continue the fight against extremism and terrorism, he said.
The PPP, which emerged the largest group in last month's general election, on Saturday named Yousuf Raza Gillani as its prime ministerial candidate for the coalition government to be formed with the support of the PML-N, Awami National Party and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam.
