India & Shobhaa De: Going strong at sixty

March 20, 2008
It's almost like a page out of Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children, a magic-realism masterpiece about children born on the stroke of the epochal midnight hour in 1947, when India found her freedom. These children, it explained, were special, born for far more than the ordinary world offered.

A conversation with De has her arguing the difference between that madcap novel and her own non-fiction work before she realises that she is, in fact, the one we are calling a Child of Midnight, at which point she tosses us a big smile. 'Missed it by a few months,' she laughs.

Non-fiction isn't what the world expects of De, really. Over the years she's been a novelist utterly unafraid to take on graphic sexuality, always revelling, with a smile, in scandal of all kind. On the other hand, however, the former model is also a fiercely opinionated columnist writing on subjects across the board. Quite clearly, for Shobhaa De, there are no limits.
