'I don't trust our power-mad politicians'

July 21, 2008
Evalina Lyngdoh Marbaniang, who is in her late 20s and spoke to rediff.com from Tura, Meghalaya, is certain she does not support the nuclear deal.

She says: "India can do without it. We're self-sufficient and have enough know-how of our own. We should not trust the US. What guarantee do we have that they would share everything with us?"

She adds: "I don't trust our power-mad politicians either. Like Shibu Soren, who is lending support as he has been 'offered' his coal ministry back."

Evalina, who originally hails from Laban, Shillong, is now on a transfer and working as an accountant in a rural bank at this town located in the West Garo Hills, 330 km from the state's capital city, has been following these issues carefully in the newspapers and realises that India needs energy. "We do need power and nuclear is the best way. But at the same time there are too many cons in this deal, mainly the fear that it would be misused."

What does she feel will be the outcome of the trust vote? She is uncertain, "It could go either way."

Does Evalina believe Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is the right man to lead India? "He has the qualities but what he lacks is determination."
