Soaring mercury signals onset of sizzling summer

April 24, 2008
A severe heat wave has gripped Nagpur, with the city recording a maximum temperature of 44.1 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.

The month of April, that normally signals the onset of severe heat wave conditions across north India, has signaled a torrid start this year. Residents were seen covering themselves with scarves and protective sunglasses to block the harsh rays of the sun.

According to officials in the meteorological department, Nagpur, known for its hot and sizzling summers, is expected to see the mercury rising up to 45 degrees Celsius towards the month end and crossing 46 degrees in May.
