Signalling the downfall of the Robert Mugabe regime, Zimbabwe's opposition on Thursday claimed victory in the country's presidential elections.
Official election results showed that Mugabe's ruling party had lost its parliamentary majority to Morgan Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change, although state media indicated a run-off between Tsvangirai and Mugabe.
The MDC's proclamation that it had earned an outright victory, with over 50 per cent of the votes, was quickly denied by the Mugabe government.
