Monks face military's might in Myanmar
September 26, 2007
Media reports said about 5,000 monks and students set off on a demonstration from Shwedagon Pagoda to the Sule Pagoda in Yangon along with members of the party headed by detained Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. However, they were blocked by military trucks along the route.
Armed forces then fired warning shots and tear gas shells to disperse demonstrators while hauling away monks into waiting trucks.
The military government has imposed curfew in sensitive areas and has imposed a ban on public gatherings. Intensive patrolling has been launched near monasteries and in Yangon, the largest city of the country that has been witnessing large-scale protests.
