Celebrating a friendship

September 25, 2007

Did you know George Washington, America's first President, sent an envoy to India?

As India celebrated the 60th anniversary of her Independence and concluded a landmark civilian nuclear cooperation agreement with the United States, the American embassy in New Delhi hosted an exhibition of photographs celebrating 60 years of the India-US ralationship.

We present glimpses from that exhibition, reproduced here with the US embassy's kind permission.

Clockwise, from top left:

President Dwight D Eisenhower welcomes Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Washington, DC, 1956.

Nehru with Albert Einstein in Princeton, 1949. The great scientist was a strong supporter of India's Independence.

Nehru meets Dalip Singh Saund, the first Indian-American Congressman, in California, 1956.
