Even as former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif's Pakistan International Airlines plane touched down at Islamabad Airport and then took off again for Jeddaah, areas of Pakistan were convulsed with turmoil as his supporters attempted to congregate and offer their support.
The Pakistani government sent Sharif back into exile hours after he returned home vowing to topple the government of President Pervez Musharraf, who ousted him eight years ago.
Police detained the 57-year-old Sharif on corruption charges on his arrival at Islamabad airport following a tense standoff involving his passport. He was deported soon after and put on a plane heading for Saudi Arabia.
