Hy'bad: 15 feared killed in flyover collapse

September 09, 2007
About 15 persons were feared killed and several others injured when a portion of flyover under construction at the busy Punjagutta crossroads in the city collapsed around 1915 hours on Sunday following heavy rains.

The flyover passes from Begumpet area to Road Number one in Banjara Hills. A portion of the flyover came down on the left side with a thud, trapping as many as eight vehicles-including two auto-rickshaws and six cars-under its debris.

Some of the cars got mangled under the impact of the huge moulds of concrete and steel that fell on them from a height of over 20 to 25 feet.

This correspondent, who rushed to the spot and remained there for nearly four hours, saw confusion and commotion prevailing all over the place. An inspector from Punjagutta traffic police station, who was first to reach the spot, said the supporting pillar was shaken from its foundation under the impact of gushing water that swept away some earth.
